Making Money at Home

The idea of making money at home is attractive to many people and for good reason. There are some definite advantages to having a home based business, but there are also a few possible drawbacks. In this page we will look at some of them.

One of the major advantages that appealed to me was that I did not have to get up and rush around to get to work on time. No fighting traffic, punching a clock or putting up with growly bosses or complaining co-workers. If I wake up late, fine, if I wake up early and want to start early OK. I can even work in my house coat and slippers if I want. My weekends are whenever I decide they are.

Another obvious reason why making money at home is a good idea. You can be with your family, it is nice to be there and have extra time with them. You are already getting the bonus time that would have been spent getting to and from work.

Those two reasons alone would be enough to get me going. However they are also the two areas that can cause problems. Because you do not have a boss watching your production you have to do it yourself. We all have days when we don't want to get up and get started. If you are working for somebody else the potential threat of losing that job is usually enough to get you moving.

I have to admit that I can be very lazy at times. I have had to set up my own internal 'boss', If I want time off I have to promise to make it up later and really do it. My boss can get really mean at times.

Distractions

It will also be necessary to train the people around you. For some reason when you have a home business other people seem to think you have time to spare. With children in the home it is obvious that they will want your attention. Fortunately they will quickly understand that you are at work and need to make money, don't just tell them you are busy, tell them you are at work. When you take a coffee or lunch break you can spend time with them.

One of the toughest ones I had to handle was someone that I had worked with at the hotel. He was a nice, friendly character and I did not want to be rude to him. He would come to visit after his shift at 3 O'clock in the afternoon and want to chat. Despite some very broad hints about me working, he would still show up at my door.

One day I went to the hotel in the middle of his shift and started talking away at him and generally getting in the way. Of course he started raising objections, which I ignored. It took him about twenty minutes before he realized what I was doing. "OK Ray, I get the message." We were able to stay friends after that.

Other Thoughts

When you start making money at home then you become eligible for some tax breaks. I work from my home in Canada, you should check with an accountant in your area to find out which tax deductions you will be entitled to. Some of the ones that I can claim are: a portion of mortgage or rent, some phone and long distance charges, gas mileage, entertainment expenses, travel and many more.

Of course to claim them you must also report your income. Keep it legal and honest, it is much cheaper in the long run. When you start to make money then it is a good idea to hire an accountant, they can save you a lot of tax money and their fees are tax deductible too.

Whether you are looking for ways to make extra money or working out how to get rich, a home based business is a great idea. As always your success will depend on you. Making money at home must be looked upon as a business, it is not for the faint of heart or lazy. Any business requires time and effort.

If you are looking for a way to avoid work then do not go into business for yourself. Most self employed people work more hours, and often less pay, at least when they first start out. There have been many times when I have worked fourteen or more hours in a day. However if you are doing something you enjoy to make money then it does not seem like work.
